At Sittr, safety and trust are the highest priority for the parents, their children and the Sittr carers. Accidents can happen, it’s a fact of life. Therefore it is imperative that carers know how to manage a medical emergency if something should occur.

All carers that apply to work for Sittr must hold a current First Aid certification. Qualified training centres around the country run these courses every day and the information is relatively simple to learn and retain. Prices do vary, often you can find discounted courses for $70 but a qualified First Aid training centre like St John’s will charge closer to $150 for the course.

At Sittr, we don’t mind where you obtain your certification, as long as the course was completed in Australia and is a nationally accredited course conducted by a Registered Training Organisation (RTO). Usually your course will be coded like this;

HLTAID002 (we will accept this)
HLTAID003 (our preference)
HLTAID004 (our preference)

The course includes:

  • Legal issues
  • Infection control
  • DRSABCD action plan
  • Managing the unconscious breathing casualty
  • Resuscitation (CPR)
  • Defibrillation
  • Choking
  • First aid kits
  • Chest pain
  • Asthma (vital for caring for children)
  • Allergic reactions and Anaphylaxis (vital for caring for children)
  • Shock
  • Wounds and bleeding
  • Burns
  • Safety and risk management
  • Fractures, sprains, strains, dislocations
  • Head, neck and spinal injuries
  • Chest and abdominal injuries
  • Facial and eye injuries
  • Heat induced illness, cold induced illness
  • Poisons
  • Bites and stings
  • Other medical emergencies

We hope that your babysitter will ever need to use the above skills while on the job. But should the situation arise, we are proud to offer parents peace of mind knowing that all the carers on Sittr are trained in simple tasks like cleaning a small wound to dealing with a serious situation like knowing how to perform CPR, dealing with burns or calling an Ambulance.

While leaving your children with the teenage girl next door sounds like an easy gig, the risks outweigh the cost cutting option. Should an accident happen or your child require first aid, most teens aren’t emotionally equipped to deal with stressful situations like a medical emergency.
